Design Notes: The Rancho Planter

Every planter we make answers to something that came before. This one answers to someone still making the case today.

In Rooted in Good Design, we wrote about why REVIVAL exists at all: postwar America built one of the great ceramics golden ages, and then let most of it quietly disappear. Our Cylinder carries Gainey Ceramics forward. Our Round Two carries Richard Lindh's two-piece pots forward. Both are answers to studios that closed their doors decades ago.

The Rancho is our first answer to that same question in the present tense. Rather than draw a shape from a shuttered studio's catalog, we built a new series around a working designer instead — ceramicist Angela Nicole Drew — and a simple commitment: pay the person who's still making the case for good design directly, on every unit sold, while she's here to see it.

What is the Artisan Series, and why does it start with the Rancho?

The Artisan Series is our model for partnering with living designers, rather than only carrying historical studios forward. The Rancho is its first piece: a small ceramic planter with a softly rounded base and a wide belly that tapers gently upward — rounder and more playful than the straight-sided Cylinder or the sculptural Round Two, and Angela Nicole Drew's shape to begin with, not ours. It's scaled for shelves and tabletops rather than floor space — a single air plant, a baby succulent, a small trailing green. Every Rancho sold includes a direct commission back to her, for as long as it's part of the collection.

The Artisan Series pays a living designer directly, on every planter sold — not a tribute to a studio that closed decades ago, but a partnership with someone still working today.

How do I size the Rancho Planter to fit my plant?

Because the Rancho's rounded shape affects interior volume differently than a straight-sided pot, grow pot fit varies by size more than it does on some of our other collections — which is exactly why we size to the nursery pot instead of the outer diameter. Check the size printed on your grow pot, or measure the top rim, then match it to the chart below. If you're between two sizes, size up; a little extra clearance makes watering and airflow easier, especially if you plan to plant directly rather than drop in the grow pot.

How is the Rancho Planter made?

Each Rancho is slip-cast and hand-finished, then high-fired into dense, vitreous stoneware — glazed on the interior for a smooth, easy-to-clean surface, with a raw clay exterior that shows the natural texture of the material. Because each piece is finished by hand, subtle variation in tone and glaze depth from one planter to the next is expected, not a flaw. A drainage hole and a matching saucer are included with every size; the saucer is channeled underneath to let air move beneath the pot, so it dries down evenly between waterings instead of trapping moisture against the base.

Is the Rancho Planter frost-proof for outdoor use?

Yes. The high-fired stoneware body is frost-proof and built for indoor and outdoor use through seasonal temperature changes — on a windowsill in winter or on a patio table through a dinner outside. As with any outdoor planter, avoid letting water sit and freeze in the saucer during hard freezes.

What colors is the Rancho Planter available in?

Two earthy, neutral tones: Sand, a soft off-white cream, and Terra, a warm natural clay. Both let the shape and the hand-finished surface do the talking rather than the color — which is part of why the Rancho reads equally at home stacked with books, on an outdoor table, or grouped in a single windowsill.
